Rose Window

The Rose Window

“Come Unto Me...”

The Willet Stained Glass Studios of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, designed this rose window for Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church.  In the center of the window, Christ is standing on top of the world with his hands extended, suggesting the verse, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)  He is also depicted here as the risen Christ, indicated by the nail prints in his hands and feet.  Christ is surrounded by four medallions.  On the top left is the symbol chi-ro (XP), the first two Greek letters of the world “Christ.”  On the top right are the bread and wine, symbolized by wheat, grapes, and a chalice.  On the bottom right are symbols of Pentecost:  burning flames and a dove.  On the bottom left is the symbol of St. Andrew, recalling the Scottish heritage of the Presbyterian church.

The outer circle is marked by the four points of the compass -- North, East, South, and West -- suggesting the four corners of the earth.  The circle consists of eight medallions depicting Christ’s ministry.  Beginning at the top and moving clockwise, the first scene is Christ the Leader, calling the fishermen Andrew and Peter.  The second scene is Christ the Teacher, delivering the Sermon on the Mount.  The third scene is Christ the Friend of Sinners, with the woman of Samaria at the well.  The fourth scene is Christ the Miracle Worker, symbolized by a boy with a basket of loaves and fishes -- the feeding of the five thousand.  The fifth scene is Christ the Healer and Giver of Life, raising Jairus’s daughter.  The sixth scene is Christ the Counselor, with Mary and Martha.  The seventh scene is Christ the Man of Sorrows, praying in the garden of Gethsemane.  The eighth scene is Christ the King, seated in glory.
