The Baptistry Window of Calvary Baptist Church
The Baptistry Window
of Calvary Baptist Church

The baptistry window of Calvary Baptist Church was installed in 2003 to provide a Christ honoring focal point as one enters the sanctuary. The stained and beveled glass window gives a symbolic glimpse of the all-sufficiency of our Savior.

At the highest peak of the window we find the eternal truth proclaimed in the book of Revelation, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” This is depicted in the Greek symbols for Alpha and Omega being fused into one.

The central focus of the window is the cross on Calvary where Jesus Christ, Messiah was crucified and shed His blood in order that salvation could be purchased for all mankind. “And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him.” Luke 23:33 The cross is the centerpiece of the Word of God. All of the Old Testament looks forward to it, and all of the New Testament glories in the
salvation it provided.

In the background of Calvary is the city of Jerusalem with a path winding to Calvary and beyond to the tomb, representative of the road Christ traveled in His earthly ministry. “Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death. Matthew 20:18”

From behind the hillside to the west is a river flowing into the base of the window where it falls into a pool reflective of the life giving water that only Christ can
supply.
“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:14

We also are reminded of the New Testament ordinance of baptism in obedience to Christ’s command as a picture of the death, burial, and resurrection of our Savior. Note also the ordinance of Communion depicted by the grapes and wheat among the greenery of the background. “For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.” 1 Corinthians 11:26

The scene is shown at the dawn of the resurrection. Christ is no longer on the cross and the grave is now empty. We then see the window in the back of the sanctuary resembling both the ascension and eventual return of our Lord and Savior in the sky. “This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” Acts 1:11

M
ay this artistic reminder of the work of Christ be a motivation for each one of us to fulfill the great commission, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
