AWANA - Because Families Matter to God!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is AWANA? Awana is an international youth program offered by Calvary Baptist Church as a positive influence in the development of young people.  The AWANA name is derived from an idea in the Bible found in II Timothy 2:15 which reads, "Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed."

Why Awana?
In the purpose of Awana is stated best in the pledge to the Awana flag, "I pledge allegiance to the Awana flag, which stands for the Awana Clubs, whose goal is to reach boys and girls with the gospel of Christ, and train them to serve Him.

What do Awana Clubs teach?
The Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Everyone is a sinner (Romans 3:23) and in God's eyes deserves eternal punishment in hell (Romans 6:23, Revelation 20:15).  But Jesus Christ, God's Son, paid the penalty for our sin when He was crucified on the cross and cross from the dead (Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4).  If we trust Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, we receive God's gift of eternal life in heaven.  John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."  Salvation is a free gift; we cannot buy it or earn it by doing good works (Ephesians 2:8-9).  Instead we must simply accept it.  Each child and leader must understand this important message, for it is what our Awana Clubs teach and the reason for their existence.

Who may attend? Boys, Girls, and teens age 3 thru 6th grade.

When does AWANA Meet? Wednesday from 6:25 – 8:00 pm during the school year.

Why should my kids attend? AWANA offers sound Biblical instruction, scripture memory, organized games, great Christian Fellowship, and awards for completing scripture verses and good sportsmanship.

Is there a fee? Yes. Nominal yearly dues are necessary to cover the cost of the awards. In addition, an AWANA vest or shirt will be necessary for Clubbers to display their awards. Finally, scripture manuals will be obtained for your Clubber. However, if cost is an issue, please let us know as we want every child to feel welcome.

Awana Cubbies

Cubbies is an Awana club designed for boys and girls, ages 3 and 4.  It is required that all boys and girls must be 3 years of age when beginning Cubbies and be potty trained.  Cubbies will enjoy games, puppets, crafts, awards and other activities each night in Awana.  They will get to know the special characters of Cubbies:  Cubbie Bear, Luv E. Lamb, Ern E. Elephant, Zip E. Zebra and Gigi Giraffe.  These fun characters will take preschoolers on a thrilling journey through God's Word.  The will learn key basic truths about God, Jesus, salvation and the Bible.

Cubbies will memorize approximately 55 verses and up to 120 adidtional verses if they complete our extra-credit curriculum in two years.

Sparks is an Awana club designed for boys and girls, grades Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd.

Sparks includes a fun firefly character named Sparky, a red vest with accompanying awards for "Sparkies" to wear, and a nature motif.

The Sparks curriculum is designed to take these boys and girls a step deeper into God's Word while giving unsaved boys and girls regular opportunities to hear the gospel and come to faith in Jesus Christ.  The sparks program is firmly grounded in Scripture.  There are three handbooks for Sparks, Skipper, Hiker, and Climber.  Each handbook communicates spiritual truths through memory verse drills, crafts, activities, and review of key doctrines, Bible facts and verses.  The three handbooks feature:

  • Basic truths about God, Jesus, salvation and the Bible
  • An increased emphasis on Scripture memory over the preschool materials
  • Clear and consistent presentation of the gospel message

All Sparks begin in the first book and may complete a book for each school year.

Truth and Training (T&T) clubs are designed for boys and girls in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.  The name Truth and Training reflects the passion of Awana to teach 3rd-6th graders the truth of God's Word and to train them to follow Christ in their daily lives.  Our goal is that many of today's young people will become tomorrow's church leaders.  T&T is the program that trains the leaders of tomorrow - Today!

In Truth and Training there is an entrance book and 4 handbooks.  Each clubber must begin in the entrance book, followed by Book 1. Then they may complete as many books per year as their grade in school.  For example, third graders can only receive an award for completing 1 book.  A fourth grader that begins Awana may complete book 1 then also complete book 2.  For more information about the handbooks click here.

The T&T uniform is a green t-shirt with the T&T logo.  Uniforms cost $14.00 and may be purchased at the Awana desk in the office foyer.  Uniforms must be paid for in advance.  The clubber can wear the same uniform from the 3rd through 6th grade.

T&T weekly meetings will expose all youth to the gospel message, Scripture memory, Bible study, awards, team-oriented games and a whole lot of fun!

By the time a boy or girl has completed four years of T&T, he/she will have learned and review approximately 310 verses.
