Tuesday Concert Series

The Series
The Tuesday Concert Series is a major outreach program of Epiphany to the people of downtown Washington.  High-quality music—mostly classical, but with occasional performances of folk and traditional music—is presented here every Tuesday year-round at 12:10pm. Talented artists from all over greater Washington, and frequently from around the country and world, seek out Epiphany’s fine acoustics, exceptional musical instruments and reliable and appreciative audience. Programs in the Tuesday Concert Series are free, but we encourage attendees to make a contribution in support of the performers of each event, who receive as payment only what the day’s audience contributes.

The Tuesday Concert Series has been a significant part of The Church of the Epiphany’s outreach to the people of downtown Washington – workers, residents and visitors – for over a quarter of a century.  Although our audience members make weekly offerings for each concert, all of that money is directed to the performers.  The administration of the Tuesday Concert Series is a considerable expense – approximately $40,000 per year.

If you value the Tuesday Concert Series, we hope that you will consider making a donation to assist The Church of the Epiphany in continuing this cultural offering.

Recurring Artists
Washington Bach Consort
Dr. J. Reilly Lewis founded the Washington Bach Consort in 1977 with the goal of studying and performing the complete vocal and instrumental works of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries. The Consort has a professional chorus of 16-24 singers, as required, and an orchestra of professional Washington-area musicians noted for their performance of 18th century music.  Six times per year, the Consort’s performance features an organ prelude and a Bach cantata. Directly preceding the cantata, Maestro Lewis gives a brief and engaging history of the work. During their twenty-plus years of Noontime Cantata performances, the Washington Bach Consort has performed the entire surviving collection of Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas once on modern instruments, and is currently working its way through the entire collection again, this time on period instruments.

Levine School of Music
Members of the Levine School of Music’s faculty perform a variety of high-quality concerts on the Tuesday Concert Series on the second Tuesday of most months throughout the year. The Levine School was begun in 1977 by Ruth Cogen, Diana Engel, and Jaclin Marlin, who named the school in memory of Selma M. Levine, a Washington attorney and amateur pianist who took particular delight in encouraging young musicians. The Levine School of Music serves as a vital community resource by embracing two principles that are central to its mission: excellence and accessibility.
