Stephen Ministry

Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2 NRSV)

Stephen Ministers are caring friends who listen, care, pray, support and encourage fellow parishioners and friends of the Desert Palms community. Trained with over 50 hours in providing emotional and spiritual care, Stephen Ministers are confidential companions to people going through long-term illness, grief, job and family transitions, spiritual or personal crises, or who simply need a listening ear. It is a ministry of presence and companionship.

Stephen Ministers are assigned a care receiver, with whom they meet once a week for about an hour. Plenary sessions are held once a month (generally the first Tuesday of the month) for Stephen Ministers to meet for fellowship, support and continuing education.

If you would like more information about becoming a Stephen Minister, or if you or someone you know would benefit from having the support of a Stephen Minister, please contact someone on our Stephen Ministry Leadership Team: Pastor Linda (Pastoral Advisor), Suzanne Burke, Kathe Cochrane, Jan Ettele, Carole Jean Soine and Nora Timson.

Stephen Ministry multiplies blessings throughout the church and community.

  • Congregations carry out Christ’s commandment to “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12 RSV) in a powerful and practical way.
  • Pastors have a team of gifted, trained, and committed lay caregivers ready to minister to hurting people.
  • Laypeople nurture and use their gifts in meaningful ministry, growing spiritually as they serve others.
  • People who are hurting have a caring Christian presence to provide emotional and spiritual support.

In short, Stephen Ministry helps carry out the mission of the church. We are so richly blessed by the dedication and ongoing work of our Stephen Ministers!
