Int Falls editorial on Christmas dinner
Editorial

Remember what it felt like as a child during the holidays to come to the table with family and friends and share a meal?
Everyone felt safe and warm as they talked and ate together.
Two Borderland pals, Carl Brown and Lee Grim, want to bring those family feelins to the community Christmas Day. And they deserve credit for coming up with the idea and following through on it.
The two men, with help from other generous folks, are organizing the first ever Christmas Day Dinner from 3-7 p.m. at the Roadhouse in International Falls.
The idea is simple, according to Grim and Brown. They want to help spread the spirit of Christmas, build community spirit, and provide a venue for people alone, in need, or who want to share it with others.
Everyone—Grim and Brown in particular—involved in this communal dinner deserves credit. Seven local churches, organizations, businesses and volunteers are helping to make this dinner a success.
But success can be measured in many ways. If the dinner and social feeds people who are hungry for food and fellowship, it is a success. If it reminds the lucky among us who have family and friends and friends in our lives that not everyone is so lucky, it is a success. And if it brings our community together for a common benefit, it is a success.
Clearly, conducting any kind of event successfully takes people who give of their time and energy. This dinner is no different. Already a number of people have stepped up to volunteer to transport people to the dinner, help in cooking and serving, among other needs. And, there’s plenty of work for everyone.
Volunteering of one’s time and energy to such an event is a gift not only to those who take part in the dinner, but also to the person volunteering. There are few better ways to recall the true meaning and feeling of Christmas than by doing something for someone else while at the same time doing it for yourself. We encourage people to find out of they can help in some way.
Again, kudos to all involved in the Christmas Community Dinner. We hope it provides a safe and warm feeling to all of Borderland.
