History of First Baptist Church of Tarboro
According to early records of our church, on February 6, 1803, a conference was held in Tarborough and a Baptist Church was constituted. The orginal site of the church was on the banks of the Tar River.
The Civil War and reconstruction days took their toll on all Southerners. Church histories and recorded minutes of associational meetings are scarce. Some were lost, others were not held. However, resilience, determination, and courage were exhibited by the people of Tarboro, as well as the rest of the South, and soon they wer egetting their lives back in order. In 1876, the Tarborough Missionary Baptist Church was re-organized and plans for a new building were laid. By 1888, the church membership had incrased to twenty-five making this second house of worship unsuited to the needs of the growing church. In 1890, the church acquired the property on which the present church stands.
The membership of the church grew and church records of October 13, 1923 indicate the name of the Tarboro Baptist Church was changed to First Baptist church. On July 20, 1926, ground was broken for the new and present building. It was formally opened during the week of June 3 - 10, 1928. By this time the membership had grown to 300.
A Children's building was added and dedicated on May 2, 1965. Since that time, the church has acquired the remainder of the block on which the church stands as well as the property and building across the street behind the Post Office. That building now houses our Youth program.
