Jeremiah Project

JEREMIAH PROJECT

The Jeremiah Project is an after-school pottery, drama, and computer/digital imaging program serving middle and high school students. These students need positive choices to help them grow, and a safe space to build positive self-esteem while learning new skills. They are at a critical stage in their lives and at-risk for making poor choices if they do not have positive options. We help at-risk youth try old things in the ancient art of making pottery, develop poise and self-confidence through self-expression, and try new things on the frontiers of cyber space.  Simultaneously, relationships develop with people of different cultural, racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Pottery - The pottery program emphasizes building self-esteem through art.  Students are introduced  to the pottery wheel and hand-building techniques, as well as surface decoration and glazing.  Clay is a good teacher.  Clay comes from the ground and helps ground the people it touches. In addition to learning the technical skills of pottery, centering on the wheel helps teach children and youth how to center their own lives.

Drama - The drama program uses improvisational techniques to help encourage quick thinking and a level of comfort in front of peers and adults. This program equips youth to be at ease while presenting them in a poised and articulate manner when faced with new and even outrageous scenarios. Value is given to stories and events as told from the youth's point of view. It also encourages positive reinforcement from peers and adults through laughter and applause. Improvisation teaches working together in community to create something together in the spirit of fun and play.

Computer - In the Information Technology Center, students are introduced to digital photography and image capture using digital cameras and scanners, and graphic design programs for image editing and manipulation. The computer component of the Jeremiah Project introduces students to technology and the Internet as a source of information and inspiration regarding the arts, builds computer and Internet skills for school and the future, and develops creative potential.
