Jeremiah Project

JEREMIAH PROJECT

The Jeremiah Project is an after-school pottery, drama, and computer/digital imaging program serving middle and high school students. These students need positive choices to help them grow, and a safe space to build positive self-esteem while learning new skills. They are at a critical stage in their lives and at-risk for making poor choices if they do not have positive options. We help at-risk youth try old things in the ancient art of making pottery, develop poise and self-confidence through self-expression, and try new things on the frontiers of cyber space.  Simultaneously, relationships develop with people of different cultural, racial and ethnic backgrounds.

JSP 2009-1

Pottery Art - Students learn patience, perseverance and self-discipline through their creative work in the pottery studio. The ancient art of pottery stimulates creativity and builds self-esteem. Clay comes from the earth and helps ground the people it touches. Centering on the wheel teaches youth how to center one’s own life. Students work on the wheel, develop hand-building skills, and decorate and glaze handmade clay creations.

Performing Arts - Performing arts teach working together in community to create something together. Peers and adults through laughter and applause give positive reinforcement. Value is given to stories and events as told from the youth’s point of view. Performing arts helps students develop poise and self-confidence through self-expression and equip youth to be at ease while presenting the self in a poised articulate manner when faced with new or uncomfortable scenarios.

Vortex Computer Technology - Youth achieve greater academic success through learning activities exploring the frontiers of cyber space. Students become familiar with technology and the Internet as a source of information and inspiration regarding the arts. Youth build computer skills and develop creative potential. They learn to take pictures using digital equipment and use those pictures in projects that experiment with shape, form, color, texture, etc. They learn to use common computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation programs that will help them achieve success in middle school, high school and beyond.
