The dream began in Flower Mound, Texas, in March 1986, with a group of eighteen who were committed to a dream of describing and developing a pastor-directed Bible study for training Christian disciples. The result was
- Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study (Disciple I), an approach that emphasizes disciplined reading of and listening to Scripture. Groups move through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation, reading more than 70% of the Bible.
In 1989 word had come across the church. Lives are being transformed; churches are being renewed. The result was
- Into the Word Into the World (Disciple II), an approach that encourages persons to open themselves to hearing what God has to say to them through the Bible and to be guided into their particupar ministry in the world. Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts are read entirely.
In 1992 a gathering of laity and Bible scholars, bishops and marketers, clergy and publishers, professors and editors witnessed that God is at work through Disciple. The result was
- Remember Who You Are (Disciple III), an approach that weaves the connection between memory and identity as the people of God. Half the sessions are spent on the prophets and half on the letters of Paul.
From Creation to New Jerusalem, the journey took on length and depth. The result was
- Under the Tree of Life (Disciple IV), an approach that frames the biblical story in the Garden of Genesis, on either side of the river of Revelation, and through all the colors in between.
Building on the foundation of the other four studies, Disciple Resources shaped a study that carried forward the philosophy of high commitment, long-term, disciplined study. The result was
- Jesus in the Gospels, an approach that presents events and teachings in order to get the whole picture of Jesus as it emerges in the four Gospels.
KUMC offers several Disciple Bible study classes each year, depending on demand. Most years, at least one weekday class is offered, with other classes meeting in the evening. Sign-ups take place in late-July through August, with classes starting in September and running through May.
