Mexico Reflections - Tom and Sam Roberts, 2009

During our week in Mexico, we and many Mexican volunteers worked hard to build a home for Miguel and his family. Miguel was with us every day, and toward the end of the week, Sam gave Miguel his steel toed work boots, knowing that Miguel could use them much more than he could.

That evening, Miguel and his wife, Erika, and daughter, Sophia, invited us over for dinner. It was a simple, but very generous meal, considering how few resources they have.

Miguel was proud of his new home. There was no roof yet, so we had dinner under the stars. He showed us his wedding pictures and then his very special and prized collection of die cast metal cars. Miguel is an auto mechanic, loves cars, and is very proud of his collection.

The next day, Miguel gave Sam one of his prized cars; a metal yellow school bus, with their names and all our names written on it, with the quote "We Thank God For You."

We see this bus as more than a very generous gift. We also see the bus as a metaphor for the Holy Spirit and for the universal church, for all of God's family.

As with Miguel’s family, as with all the workers at Faith Ministry, as with all the volunteers and congregations that come to Reynosa, as with all the members of the Meeting House here in Alexandria, as with everyone in God's family all over the world, we are all riders on this bus God has given us. We do not chose who rides with us or where the bus goes. God calls us and sends us out in God’s bus to do God’s work. Through His driver, the Holy Spirit, God sends us to risk our own peace and comfort in compassion for others. The Holy Spirit guides our way.

This bus takes us to places where we are called to do God's work, to places like Reynosa; to meet and help people like Miguel, Erika, and Sophia. This bus also took Miguel and his family to meet us.

We feel this yellow school bus brought us closer to God, not only by what we were able to do for Miguel and his family, but also by what Miguel and his family did for us. We were all touched by their love, their compassion, and their generosity, by what they gave back to us.
