Mexico Reflections - Jaron Drucker, 2009

As an active youth in this congregation I have participated in the Mexico mission trip for the past 6 years. The experience and interactions I have encountered on these missions have been life changing and extremely valuable. From working with the Mexican people and with the people from this church, I have learned that even the smallest amount of effort can make a big difference in another person’s life.

Beyond the time I have spent laying block and enjoying mexican cuisine, what I really value from the mission trips is my sponsorship for Jose. Jose Alejandro lives with his mother and father and 2 younger sisters in the colonias of Mexico. Due to their lack of resources, Jose had to quit school and work while his sisters continued their studies.

When I first met and worked with Jose several years ago, it was absolutely inspirational. While Jose speaks very little English, and I speak very little Spanish, his effort to try to communicate and show his appreciation was extremely touching. When I found out that he had had to quit school I was absolutely devastated. I made a decision that week to support Jose for the rest of his schooling, and when I told him and his family of my commitment that Friday, I knew I had made a difference. I have been supporting Jose for 2 years now, and giving half my pay check to his education is the most fulfilling thing I have ever done.

I want to leave you with the thought that everything counts. It doesn’t matter how big or small your contribution is, or whether it is your time, money or assistance that you are giving. It all matters, and when it comes down to it, giving the smallest of things can make the biggest difference in another’s life. As a member of this church and a believer in Jesus Christ, I challenge you to make that difference.
