Our History:

In the year 1883, members of Centernary Methodist Episcopal Church in Charlestown, South Carolina moved to the Aiken area. Upon their arrival they did not find a church of their religious persuasion, so they eventually joined Cumberland CME Church. Later they would seek help in starting a church from Dr. L. M. Dunton, President of Claflin College. For the next year plans were made and goals set by those who would be the founders of Wesley United Methodist Church.

A lot was purchased at the corner of Richland and Fairfield from Mr. I.A. Givens. He was later contracted to build the building for $3000.00. The project was completed by members and community volunteers, and on October 5, 1885 the cornerstone was laid and the dedication done. At the ceremony were many notable guests including Martha Schofield. The building was christened Wesley United Methodist Episcopal Church, which was later changed to its current name Wesley United Methodist Church.

Our Motto:

We are a small church located in the heart of Aiken, South Carolina, but we have a big heart filled with love and the spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ. Though we are rich in history and tradition, we welcome growth, new ideas, and the opportunity to worship with all of our Christian friends. "Behold how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity"

Our Goal:

Our goal is to increase our local and citywide ministry through a renewed Spirit of Christian Fellowship.
