Confirmation

Confirmation at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church

Confirmation is an important part in the life of the St. Matthew's community. We provide programs for both teenagers and adults. Each program has its own flavor and focus helping to bring the participant into a fuller life in Christ.

Teenage Confirmation

Our yearlong program begins in June with the commissioning of the teenage confirmands. Parents and their confirmand come forward during a 10 a.m. service in early June. At the altar rail, both parent and child are asked several questions and asked to commit themselves to this journey of spiritual discovery for both parent and child. Beginning in September the confirmands meet regularly in class and attend church services. They continue to meet throughout the Church School year until the end of May when they are confirmed by one of our bishops.

Our program is both rigorous and fun. They will learn about the Christian faith through the Catechism. Moreover, they will learn how to apply what they learn to their life. They learn these through a variety of methods both in the classroom and through other fun events. We feel strongly that our confirmands learn love of God and love of neighbor. This is the fundamental approach to confirmation at St. Matthew's.

To complete the program, we expect that confirmands will purchase their own Bible, acolyte at the 8 a.m. service as assigned, attend class meetings and events missing no more than six, prepare and give a sermon and perform a required number of community service hours.

Adult Confirmation, Reaffirmation or Reception

If you are an adult who would like to be a confirmed Episcopalian, a confirmed Episcopalian and would like to renew vows, a Roman Catholic who would like to be received into the Episcopal Church, or if you would simply like to renew your understanding of our Christian faith, plan to take our Adult Inquirer's Class. This dynamic course team, taught by our St. Matthew's clergy, meet Lent or Spring Sundays following the 10 a.m. Service.
