The Gabriel Project

Since we started the Gabriel Project in our parish in January 1999, we have helped at least 74 mothers (as of March 2004). The project has structured itself into several subcommittees and started to coordinate efforts with projects in other parishes at the diocesan level.

Gabriel Project volunteers make dozens of baby bonnets every year to be distributed to expectant mothers. As the story below illustrates, it does make a difference!

To All Bonnet-Making Volunteers:
The Gabriel Project would like to thank you so much for making these beautiful bonnets! You have touched so many of these girls' lives and will continue to. God has truly blessed you with a wonderful gift. We appreciate all the love and time you put into making them.

[March 2004] "A coordinator from Birthchoice called the other day and said she gave one of the bonnets to a girl who was                  contemplating an abortion. When the coordinator gave the girl one of your bonnets, she was so touched. She couldn't believe someone took the time and cared so much. It was at that moment she decided not to have an abortion."

Since June 1999, we have held baby item drives every Spring and Fall to collect baby equipment (cribs, strollers, changing tables, breast pumps, etc.), maternity, infant and toddler clothes. We try to maintain a stock of items in case of emergency.

We have participated in several church events including:

  • the 6th Annual Run for Life on Sep 9, 2000
  • the First Friday Feast on Jan 5, 2001

We have created several publicity materials:

  • We have erected a permanent sign at St. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Church on the corner of Piney Plains & Tryon Road. Also available for loan is a temporary free standing sign. The signs read "Pregnant & Need Help? Call us. 919-781-5423." This is the local 24-hour Raleigh phone number for Birthchoice.           gabriel project sign
  • We have printed brochures and flyers and established a distribution network through channels such as stores, medical offices, schools, and social services
