St. Michael's Mission Statement: "I give you a new commandment: Love one another just as I have loved you. It is by your love for one another, that everyone will recognize you as my disciples." (John 13:34-35). St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church is a worshipping servant community dedicated to ministering to our members and to the greater community in the image given to us by Jesus. This ministry is centered around the sacraments and our acts of faith, hope and charity.
Sister Parish Mission Statement: Because of our Baptism we are called by the Church to live in global solidarity with our brothers and sisters in faith. To be a truly catholic parish St. Michael's Community stands in solidarity with the parish community of Nuestra Senora de Suyapa, Olancho, Honduras. Together in faith, we foster a mutual understanding of each other's culture and traditions and work toward a quality of life for all.
With support coming from the Social Action Committee, our group was formed in 2000 and is already fully engaged with the parish leadership of Nuestra Senora de Suyapa. In Oct. of 2001, Padre Tito Mercadal and Sister Praxedes Sorto visited our parish. During their stay, they became acquainted with our parish and its culture. We, in turn, gained insight into their parish life, both its challenges and its blessings. We are excited about the long-term possibilities for further exchange. Sister Parish Volunteers Wanted: St. Michael's Sister Parish Committee invites you to join one of the following sub-committees that will support our Medical Mission to Honduras:
- Spiritual Support:
This group will coordinate prayer for the people in Honduras by asking varied parish groups to pray on a regular basis, having themes for adoration, preparing the Sunday Prayers of the Faithful and getting the homebound and others to pray for Honduras, planning Mass intentions for the people of Honduras etc..
- Family Education Sponsorship:
The task of this group is to research the ways and means of supporting the needed educational needs of the children of our Sister Parish. The group needs to work with the pastor in Honduras in determining how we can assist in the primary education of the children.
- Health Outreach:
The task of this group is to assess the medical needs of the mission in Honduras, to identify resources and to make contacts and collect these supplies.
- Parish Education/Publicity:
The task of this group is to keep St. Michael's parishioners informed about the mission in Honduras. This is done through the bulletin, the St. Michael Messenger, the North Carolina Catholic, the International Festival and any future presentations on the mission. Pictures and videos are available
- Youth and Children Connection:
This group will concentrate on keeping the elementary school in touch with the children of Honduras, to get the faith formation and teens informed and involved in the relationship with Nueva Palestina
- Finance:
This group will monitor the finances needed for the project and to raise the needed funds to keep the activities going. They will be in contact with the parish director of finance and administration.
- Delegation:
This group will coordinate any major mailing of materials and supplies to Honduras as well as recruit and coordinate the yearly delegations to Honduras. Our Sister Parish Delegation returned from Honduras to St. Michael's with a first-hand understanding of the medical needs of Nuestra Senora de Suyapa. We have worked out a plan that will involve our two parishes in providing for these medical needs. At this time we need to involve more people here in the parish in order to move ahead smoothly.
