Guest Preachers

St. Thomas Church has been privileged to host some of the finest preachers from across the United States and overseas for Sunday worship, preaching missions and special events.  Each year our Rector invites several outstanding preachers to grace our pulpit and share God's life-giving Word with us. This fall we welcome:

September 11
The Rev. Stuart Hoke, former Vicar of Trinity Church, Wall Street
The Rev. Dr. Stuart HokeBorn in Memphis, Tennessee, the Rev. Dr. Stuart Hoke is a priest of the Diocese of New York who recently retired as Staff Chaplain at Trinity Church Wall Street in New York City and Missioner to St. Paul's Chapel at Ground Zero.  After graduating from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Dr. Hoke attended the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he received the Master of Divinity degree.  Ordained in 1972, Hoke spent the greater part of his ministry serving congregations in the Southwest—Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas.  In 1996, he completed the Master of Sacred Theology degree at New York's General Theological Seminary, and was awarded the Doctor of Theology degree in the spring of 2000.  Hoke is a frequent retreat and quiet day conductor throughout the Episcopal Church.  He also is an Adjunct Professor at the General Theological Seminary in New York City where he teaches pastoral theology.  In the past year he has served as interim Chaplain and Dean of Community Life at General Seminary.  Hoke now resides in Fearrington Village, North Carolina.

The Rev. Dr. Dan MatthewsOne of our most beloved speakers will explore also be presenting a Sunday Forum on September 18 on the nature of grace and forgiveness after the destruction of the Twin Towers, which he witnessed from his office on September 11, 2001.
