What’s happening in Language Arts and Science:
The 5th grade Patriotic Program will be held on Thursday, January 23rd, at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome!
READING: We are reading the historical fiction book Lily’s Crossing by Patricia Reilly Giff. This novel takes place during World War II and will tie in nicely with what the students will be learning in Social Studies with Mrs. Epperson.
The third quarter book report requirement (non-fiction) is due March 15. The students will be given the form needed in class. It can also be found on my web page.
ENGLISH: We are almost finished studying pronouns; singular, plural, and personal; pronouns as subjects, subject compliments, direct objects, objects of the prepositions, and indirect objects; possessive, intensive, and reflexive pronouns; antecedents, and pronouns and contractions, as well as demonstrative and interrogative pronouns. The test over this material will be Friday, February 3rd. The students should use their workbooks to study for this test
COMPOSTION: We are working with “Voice”, the third trait of the six traits. This trait is the personal quality of the piece. It is the author’s original fingerprints on the page.
The students descriptive writing of their special person is due Monday (typed or hand written). Please listen to them read it out loud and sign the parent note that was given to the students on Wednesday. These will be displayed in the hallway during CSW.
SCIENCE: We began lesson 6.3 Earth’s Changing Crust. The students have created a power point to review this lesson, along with completing their study guide, which is due on Monday, Jan. 30. Our quiz will be Wednesday, February 1st.
SPELLING: We continue to work with Wilson Spelling. The irregular words (homonyms) that will be tested for the remainder of this year can be found under the spelling words tab on the website. They are tested on two pairs of homonyms each week.
VOCABULARY: Every two weeks the students get a new set of vocabulary words to work with. Each set is added to the front board for all to see and use. Every time a word is used or found by the students in class, a tally mark is placed next to the word, and a marble is added to the “treat” jar. Once the jar is filled a “special treat” is given to the students. Thanks for your support at home as the students build upon their vocabulary.
Every two weeks (on Fridays) your child will be bringing home his/her daily work in a manila folder. After looking through the work, please send the empty manila folder back to school signed and dated.
Thank you for all you do at home to make your child’s education a successful one!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Marilyn Stuit
