What’s happening in Language Arts and Science:

The 5th grade Patriotic Program will be held on Thursday, January 23rd, at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome!

READING: We are reading the historical fiction book Lily’s Crossing by Patricia Reilly Giff. This novel takes place during World War II and will tie in nicely with what the students will be learning in Social Studies with Mrs. Epperson.

The third quarter book report requirement (non-fiction) is due March 15. The students will be given the form needed in class. It can also be found on my web page.

ENGLISH: We are almost finished studying pronouns; singular, plural, and personal; pronouns as subjects, subject compliments, direct objects, objects of the prepositions, and indirect objects; possessive, intensive, and reflexive pronouns; antecedents, and pronouns and contractions, as well as demonstrative and interrogative pronouns. The test over this material will be Friday, February 3rd. The students should use their workbooks to study for this test

COMPOSTION: We are working with “Voice”, the third trait of the six traits. This trait is the personal quality of the piece. It is the author’s original fingerprints on the page.

The students descriptive writing of their special person is due Monday (typed or hand written). Please listen to them read it out loud and sign the parent note that was given to the students on Wednesday. These will be displayed in the hallway during CSW.

SCIENCE: We began lesson 6.3 Earth’s Changing Crust. The students have created a power point to review this lesson, along with completing their study guide, which is due on Monday, Jan. 30. Our quiz will be Wednesday, February 1st.

SPELLING: We continue to work with Wilson Spelling. The irregular words (homonyms) that will be tested for the remainder of this year can be found under the spelling words tab on the website. They are tested on two pairs of homonyms each week.

VOCABULARY: Every two weeks the students get a new set of vocabulary words to work with. Each set is added to the front board for all to see and use. Every time a word is used or found by the students in class, a tally mark is placed next to the word, and a marble is added to the “treat” jar. Once the jar is filled a “special treat” is given to the students. Thanks for your support at home as the students build upon their vocabulary.

Every two weeks (on Fridays) your child will be bringing home his/her daily work in a manila folder. After looking through the work, please send the empty manila folder back to school signed and dated.

Thank you for all you do at home to make your child’s education a successful one!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Marilyn Stuit

Irregular Words Spelling Lists

Students will be learning spelling by using the Wilson Learning System. Each week students will be responsible for knowing a variety of sounds and rules.  The weekly spelling test will include (1) non-sense words using these sounds/rules, (2) real words that use the weekly sounds/rules and (3) irregular words. The irregular words list for each week is listed below.

Extra Credit Opportunities
Except where otherwise noted, extra credit may be turned in any time throughout the quarter, but no later than the Friday before the quarter ends.

Extra Credit Opportunities in Language Arts

Reading: Give a report on a book of any genre. Come up with a creative way to present the book (i.e. write and perform a short skit of a part of the book, prepare a diorama of the setting of the book, retell the story in a poem or rap, dress as a character from the book and “introduce yourself”, etc.).

English, Composition, Spelling: Write a poem or a story. Be creative!

Extra Credit Opportunities in Science

Science Project: Create a science project using the scientific method (state the problem, gather information, form a hypothesis, test the hypothesis, analyze data, and draw conclusions).

Science Report: Watch a science program on television (Nova Myth Busters, etc.), take notes, and report to the class on what you learned.

Community Service & Prayer Partners

This year we will be taking part in TABLE.  TABLE is a non-profit organization that brings college students and community volunteers together to help feed hungry children in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area.  They are located at 205 W. Weaver Street in Carrboro - 1/4 mile from Weaver Street Market.

Participating children receive "loaner" backpacks on Fridays containing a variety of healthy food for the weekend, such as milk and juice boxes, cans of meat, vegetables, and fruit, breakfast food, and even a few snacks.  Receiving food in backpacks - not grocery bags - allows children a sense of privacy.  Empty backpacks are returned on Mondays to school or after-school programs for pick-up by TABLE volunteers.

Our prayer partner class is 1A.   We will plan activities together the first Friday of each month throughout the year.

5A Parent Volunteer Opportunities & Schedules

There are opportunities to volunteer in Art, Science, lunch, special parties/snacks, Halloween, Auction, and other events through the year.  If you would like to know more about volunteer opportunities, please contact our room parent for more information.
