Welcome to 8th Grade Social Studies!

Ms. Eldred

The 8th grade curriculum covers United States history, government, civics, and geography.  North Carolina is also included in this study.  We begin with migration of ancient people to North and South America and quickly review the ancient civilizations of the two continents.  As we progress through the beginning years of our nation, the students learn about the struggles that led to the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War.  The Constitution is studied in depth.  Classes learn how the country has developed into the nation it is today.  Our textbook -- The American Journey -- often highlights the part that North Carolina has played in the development of the United States.  I also have a North Carolina textbook for the students to use.  Many of the subjects that the 8th grade studies are seen by the students on the yearly trip to Washington, DC in the spring.

Policies
1. Be in your desk when the bell rings to begin class.

2. Use the restroom and get water during the break time, NOT once class begins.

3. Always come to class prepared -- bring your spiral, folder, and textbook unless told otherwise.

4. Due dates for homework assignments will be listed on the board during the first semester for all students; 8th graders will be responsible to remember the assignments during the second semester. Homework is always due on the assigned date.

5. Raise your hand before answering or asking a question. Wait to be recognized.

6. Do not leave your desk until you are dismissed.
Homework
1. Homework will be assigned when necessary. It may be given every night.

2. Occasionally homework will be assigned on weekends. It is to be done no matter how busy a student’s weekend may be.

3. Homework that is turned in late will be accepted, but the grade will be lowered.

4. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the homework policy listed in the handbook. Remember that requested homework given in advance if a student is on a trip MUST be turned in the day the student returns or a grade of zero will result.

PATROL SQUAD TIPS

PATROL UPDATE -- IT IS EACH STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO KNOW WHEN HE/SHE IS ON DUTY. THE DATES FOR EACH SQUAD ARE LISTED UNDER THE PATROL ROSTER.

ALSO, PATROL SQUAD MEMBERS MUST SPREAD THEMSELVES OUT ALONG THE FRONT SIDEWALK AND ALONG THE BACK DRIVE. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO SEE GROUPS OF STUDENTS WHEN YOU ARE PATROLING.

1. Always arrive at school as close to 7:30 as possible. It is important that you be at your position when the cars begin to pull up with the students.

2. Dress appropriately – bring rain gear when needed (do bring a pair of dry socks in case your feet get wet). A large umbrella is probably better than a poncho – but you might want to use both! Be sure to wear warm clothing when it is cold. A pair of gloves or mittens are needed when opening the cold metal doors. You will probably want to wear warm-up pants over your shorts.

3. Be friendly and polite -- always smile! Tell the people in the car to “Have a nice day.”

4. Let Ms. Eldred, Mrs. Holleran, or the office know immediately if there is a serious problem during arrival.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP AND YOUR COOPERATION!!!!!
