Classes meet at 9:40 a.m. on Sunday mornings. We encourage you to try on several classes until you find the right fit. Although general age ranges are given, people of all ages are welcome to participate in any class.
Wilshire encourages and equips singles to grow their Christian ministry through a dynamic personal relationship with God, through Jesus Christ. Pursuing discipleship through Bible study, spiritual development and fellowship helps singles identify their calling and gifts and take active roles in carrying out their mission. Christian singles are valued as members and leaders in all areas of Wilshire's ministry.
S.A.L.T. (Single Adult Leadership Team) comprises single representatives in many of the different Sunday school classes and Sunday morning assignments where singles at Wilshire are active. Members for 2011 are: Tammy Covert (Horizons), Chris Gordon (FaithPlus), Gary Looper (Cord of Three), Mollie Menton (teaching youth), Kristen Rice (Avodah). Staff Liason is Tiffany Wright. If you are single and have ideas for singles activities, projects, etc., contact one of these people.
At Wilshire, it isn't one-size-fits-all. Most classes, except where noted, include both men and women, couples and singles. Although general age ranges are given, people of all ages are welcome to participate in any class.
One class is designated just for singles:
Horizons - Room 3203
The name Horizons is an apt descriptor for this class of Single adults from various walks of life and viewpoints. Each Sunday, this mixed-age group comes together to study the Word. Known for his engaging teaching style, Mark Eggert develops and leads the weekly discussions using curriculum guidance from the class committee. Mark teaches two months out of each quarter; so in interim breaks, guest teachers are invited to lead. Horizons is directed by Tammy Covert. Check out the new Horizons Facebook Page.
Listed below are some of the classes that are particularly "mixed" with singles and couples:
Labyrinth - Community Hall Room 303
This newest class for 20s and early 30s, married and singles is taught primarily by Abbie Huff and Cameron Vickrey and directed by Katy Pritchard. It is a combination of Bible exploration and contemporary questions of faith. Topics rainge from Old Testament Bible stories, heard anew of for the first time, to questions surrounding faith and science, scripture and truth. This class aims to be a safe space for dialogue and deepening of faith.
FaithPlus - Community Hall Room 306
Married and single adults, mainly in their 20s and 30's, find friendship, community, biblical knowledge and commitment to serve others while hanging out together. Directed by Paige Pendery, the class is taught by Steve Brookshire and a rotation of other teachers. Join the FaithPlus Facebook page.
Avodah - Community Hall Room 311
"Avodah" is a Hebrew word meaning both “work” and “worship.” Singles and couples, mainly in their 30s, discuss how to bridge the gap between Sunday worship and Monday living. Topics are selected by the class and have ranged from examining a theology of money, to the theology of U2 and often include video segments. Teachers are Alan Wright and Andrew Warden.
Mosaic - Second Floor Room 2375
“Come As You Are” is the theme for this blended class of single parents and couples with children. Common bonds are authenticity, acceptance and a willingness to hold the hands of members in need. Most members are early 40s to mid-50s with elementary to high school children. The class is taught by a rotation of members from within the class and covers a wide range of topics from biblical history to today’s headlines. Directed by Melody Loggins.
Discovery - Room 1205-L
Taught by Associate Pastor Mark Wingfield, Discovery Class is an easy entry point for anyone new to Wilshire or new to adult Sunday School. This is an open enrollment class, meaning class participants include both regular members and frequent visitors from other classes who want to engage in specific studies. Lessons focus on books of the Bible or biblical topics of interest. Recent studies have focused on the Gospel of Mark, Revelation, heaven and world religions.
Epiphany - Room 3208
Couples and singles in their 40s and 50s, many with children in high school or college, engage in robust discussion of biblical topics presented by a variety of teachers. This is a class where you’re sure to have an occasional epiphany, if you’re open to discussion and considering new ideas. The class is directed by Steve Terry.
Cord of Three - Room 3308
Couples and singles, mainly in their 50s, share a vision for developing caring relationships, participating in stimulating Bible study and lively discussion, and welcoming members and visitors alike. The class takes its name from Ecclesiastes 4:12: “Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” The class is directed by Jerilynn Armstrong.
Circle of Women - Room 3201
A group of women of differing ages, walks of live and backgrounds growing in faith by the power of the Holy Spirit through Bible study, prayer, care, fellowship and service.
