Wilshire’s Youth Choir is taking its first international tour this summer to the Dominican Republic, where Wilshire is beginning a mission partnership.

This will be the first time the annual Youth Choir mission tour has coincided with a churchwide missions emphasis. Minister of Missions Mindy Logsdon and Student Minister Darren DeMent are working with Doug in a team approach to planning the trip.

Plan to attend the home concert, Sunday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary to hear about the trip in words and music.

Recent mission choir tour destinations have included Memphis, Boston, Chicago, New Orleans and New Mexico. The choir typically tours with 60 to 70 students.

The June 19-26 trip will be funded by singer fees, support from the church’s Ministry Fund and by several fund-raisers. The largest annual fundraiser for the choir tour is the Spaghetti Luncheon and silent auction, which is held in the spring.

“The Dominican Republic is a country of beautiful beaches, golf courses and resorts and profound poverty,” Doug Haney says. “Singing and doing missions work here gives our students an opportunity to learn about and experience a different culture only two hours from Miami by air.”

In the Dominican Republic, Wilshire students will sing in churches and other venues and perform at a fund-raising event for Esperanza, a micro-finance organization that is a Wilshire mission partner. Students also will lead music and arts camps for children at schools in San Miguel and San Pedro and help build a school and church in the village of Mahanaim, near Santo Domingo.
