Confirmation 2018-2019

This year at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, you and your family will embark on an exciting journey of faith. Confirmation is a season of searching and discovery, while you discern what it means to become a member Woods Church and the Presbyterian Church (USA). As we walk together through the confirmation experience, we will provide you with a supportive and loving environment in which you can explore your faith without feeling judged or pressured to give the “right” answer.  We will explore questions of faith and life using the new confirmation curriculum of the PC (USA) that explores the vows for church membership and life-long discipleship.

After studying the trends in youth ministry and talking to parents and past Confirmands, the Youth and Their Families Ministry has decided to transition confirmation from 9th to 8th grade.  This year 2018-19, Woods Church will offer two confirmation classes, one for 9th graders, and one for 8th graders. Beginning in 2019-2020, we will only offer an eighth grade confirmation class.

Some of the reasons for this change are:

  • Eighth graders are naturally pulling away from their 6th and 7th grade peers in a time of development and identity discovery.
  • Ninth graders are dealing with many stressful transitions as they begin high school and we have found that 9th grade confirmation becomes another stressor for them.
  • Ninth graders are ready to be involved in everything high school has to offer them and that includes the youth ministry programs at Woods. However, being separated from the 10th-12th grades at church makes the transition from middle school youth ministry to high school youth ministry challenging.
  • Too many of our 9th graders complete Confirmation classes and then are not involved in the life of the church they have just joined, largely due to the reasons listed here.

Confirmation is a year-long experience where we learn what it means to follow Christ.  Our amazing leaders will be on this journey with you.  We are excited that Josh Thompson will lead the 8th grade team and Kathy Maxa will lead the 9th grade team. In addition, we are excited to welcome our new Director of Youth and Their Families, Elizabeth Baril, who will teach regularly.  The teaching teams are experienced and caring leaders, eager to foster the faith of our  confirmands and walk with them as they begin the journey to life-long discipleship.

Confirmation begins on September 9th at 9:30AM in Zimmerman Hall for 8th Graders and the  Severna Park Community Center for 9th graders.  A meeting for all confirmand parents will be held September 16th at 9:30am at the Community Center. We want confirmation to be the best possible experience for your child as he or she discovers a faith identity that will last his or her lifelong.  As leaders in youth ministry, we believe this transition to eighth grade confirmation will nurture and encourage your child’s faith development in positive ways. If you have questions please do not hesitate to contact Elizabeth Baril, Director of Youth and Their Families or Holly Albrecht, Director of Family Life.
